We’re Hiring!
October 23, 2012 by Mushroomized
Editor’s note: We are no longer taking applications.
Hey everyone! Remember those new recruits Max was talking about? No? I’m Mushroomized. I’ve actually been working on this for just over a year now, quietly helping to finalize our style and get things tiled. We’ve gotten a good deal done in the art department, but we want help to speed up production.
Which is where you all come in. We’re hiring new artists, though things are a little different this time. We’ve put together an application of exactly what we want to see from potential recruits. As always, the bar is set high. We have some outstanding artists on board, and are looking for talented, experienced spriters.
If you think you’re up to the task, complete the application found here. Pay careful attention to our style; we need to see that you can sprite in the style of Mother 4.
Good luck, applicants!
Update: to be clear, applicants need to submit at least one example out of the four categories of characters, environmental, buildings, and enemies. Applications without any of these will be rejected. If you have already applied and did not include any of these four things, please resubmit your application.
Another Update: the deadline for submissions will be Nov. 11th, 12 AM EST. Expect notification as to the status of your application shortly after.
Hey guys, I know this might be done. But I was wondering if I could have a part in this wonderful game.
I find myself checking this page more and more. I cant wait to see the results of all the hard work going into Mother 4. Lots of love! New music tracks are amazing
Something Nasty
Nice.
I have a reoccuring dream where I help these two kids suicide by watching their dog for them.
Yikes.
Usually dreams are supposed to be good, right? Or, at least, reflect the subconscious…
Then again, I’m no Freud. What do you think it means?
they dont reflect anything other than what your frontal lobe was inclined to percieve with the false sensory input. memories are included in the tools or parameters that the frontal lobe has to work with, which makes reoccuring dreams much much less telling. its like hearing the opening of a joke and already knowing how it ends. not much of an investment.
the first instance is a little different though. but its about as delving as seeing images in clouds or what you see in a roschach test. it only reveals what youve made yourself inclined to see. although I dont know why Id be inclined to imagine not only suiciding kids, but helping them via watching their dog. its not me suiciding, and its not my dog. its not about me.
I’d say re-occurring dreams are ones that give you more potential to delve into. There’s probably some significance to whatever the dream pertains to if it shows up more than once. Although, like I said, the subconscious is better left to the psychologists! Even though I do fancy myself as one sometimes…
Either way, it might be fun to find potential parallels from the dream to your life. You might learn something along the way, anyway.
dreams dont have to do with the subconscious, they have to do with your frontal lobe. the frontal lobe is the section that organizes sensory input, it is essentially the lobe you experience the world through, or atleast the wall all the info goes through. when you sleep, your neurons fire randomly, which appears to the frontal lobe as sensory input. the frontal lobe doesnt actually percieve anything, its like a guy who sits at a fax machine and organizes the files that come through. but if the fax machine just starts sending gibberish, the frontal lobe doesnt know the difference. which is what the neurons are doing. thus dreams, they are the best story your frontal lobe is capable of crafting with the false sensory data. as far as your frontal lobe is concerned, it IS happening, which is why dreams illicit real reactions, like elevated heartrate and intense emotions, or real life muscle movement. memories count as the input, which can sometimes augment the nonsense and help you make sense of it in progress, but at the same time since dreams are essentially experienced like real experiences, they can be logged as memories too.
really, there is no “creative” liberties being taken. the only things that require your opinion and therefore intpretation are your reactions to what you see and maybe to some extent how intelligent your frontal lobe is and how well its able to utilize your memories to make sense of things,
but there is no subconscious aspect,
no secret desire,
no secret window to untapped ability.
its your neurons moving as rapidly as your eyes in rem,
and your frontal lobe having to pick up the slack.
You know baby, I’m tempted to say you are the smartest man alive, simply because I take one look at your paragraphs and have flashbacks of when my college textbooks.
Most of the dreams I remember are lucid, probably due to how crappy I usually sleep. It usually ends up going, ok stuffs happening, oh, wait, that doesn’t seem quite right, I’m probably dreaming. Yes, I’m dreaming, ok, let’s make this happen now instead. At that point I usually invoke my powers of flight.
lucid dreaming is a documented phenomena
and its funny you say flying because flight is the most common of the properties I evoke control over in mine too, followed closely by focus deleting. Ive been doing that one since I was a kid to try and overcome nightmares.
but lucid dreaming usually requires effort to maintain on purpose. i was doing it unguided for a long time before I realized it was a thing. Ive even been able to answer texts irl without exiting my dream on purpose. it was pretty cool. I could go on about my lucid dreaming experiences,
but back to the matter, the experience itself will largely be unique to the person. everyones brain is wired to drive in different ways with different focuses. and from what Ive heard, lucid dreaming depends largely on how capable a person can remember their dreams
because memories get used in dreams, so if you remember dreams, youll recognize dreams
Aha! I didn’t think you knew that.
Although, when I first learned that, I decided not to accept it as fact. Ever since I was younger, I thought my dreams meant something in a more spiritual sense. When I realized that it was just a bunch of neuron-firing and your mind trying to make sense of it, it bummed me a little.
So, I took the path that comforted me most.
It’s true; scientifically speaking, it really is just your mind trying to make sense of a bunch of neurons randomly exchanging electrical signals through their synapses.
But it’s not much fun that way. It presents a Life of Pi -type scenario; it doesn’t make a difference in whatever way we believe.
So, which way do we believe in?
…
As a side-note, I realize that the more I align myself with factual, scientific information, the less I seem to imagine and create. People can argue to the ends of the world with me, but if you let science reign your beliefs then you put limits on your imagination.
absolutely no true. art is completely aligned with higher thought. scientist are usually the most creative in a real way. einstein was a completely lively person. thats a very shallow take on it, to be blunt. like they have to be mutually exclusive. creativity isnt “spontanous” in essence. its as is its base word, create, to make. if you make, you are creative. but not all creativity is art. people need to reign in their flowery kids-have-a-spark-i-lost-i-used-to-be-creative idea of it and go back to the root. kids are garbage, I dont think my childhood art is more inspired than my art is now. indeed I think it takes a smart mind to percieve art at all. indeed I think intelligent people have deeper emotions, thats why they are generally more likely to be unhappy than a much more untethered mind.
and you got life of pi half right. the basis was that it didnt matter which you believed because the purpose of all of them was to have a relationship with god. its not really an argument of belief but of faith specifically.
Yes, if I’m not careful it’s very easy to wake myself up at the moment I realize I am actually just dreaming. Which isn’t a bad thing to me since it means I can also easily wake myself up whenever I want; some things are more important to me that dreams.
I agree that scientific knowledge and creativity coexist very nicely. One can be used as a tool to sharpen and hone the other. It is possible to accidentally limit yourself creatively with scientific knowledge, but once you become conscious of that fact, you can use it as a limit to be surpassed or ‘side-stepped’ in a creative fashion.
The mind is flexible in certain ways to allow a childlike mind to exist even in the environment of a ‘not-empty-anymore’ slate.
I like how this topic started with suicide. can we bring it full circle?
Most people I know who are overtly showing in their belief that Science is the only way to go are so boring and not imaginative at all. Perhaps our experiences with the matter have melded different perspectives (after all, isn’t that where every individual take comes from?); but I think that if you fully believe in Science and nothing else your “creative horizon” is limited.
The way you put it makes it seem as if this hypothetical mindset was tolerant with the belief of God and spirituality. I know I’m not confusing science-based-belief with atheist, and I don’t want to give the impression that I’m using spirituality and creativity as synonyms; still, however, the child-hood spark is the birth of not knowing and instead imagining different solutions to questions you pose yourself.
We aren’t looking at creativity in the same light. We can’t really reach a conclusion unless we are on the same page.
Life of Pi was most certainly about belief, though! Faith was most certainly important and included in belief, but it expanded much more than just on the subject of God. It dealt with more emotions than his turmoils with religion.
@juggernaut
youre just as boring on your take on creativity as your view on your friends and the attributes they associate themselves with. you can be sterile and organized and still not be “smart” about it. smart isnt exclusive to logical or “creativity”. and they arent even really exclusive opposites, you need creativity to solve perplexing equations, and logic to make coherent art. ever heard of lateral thinking? you know, that thing that made and is almost extensively used in games people love like half life and portal? thats the essence of creativity, but its also totally scientific. your friends are dull because theyre dull, not because logic is.
You’re implying the relationship can’t exist, either.
The difference between games like Portal and Half-Life and my argument is that I’m saying people who force themselves upon scientific fact as belief tend to be less creative, while games like Portal and Half-Life exercise logic, cleverness, and yes, creativity.
It seems we don’t have different definitions of creativity; it’s that we aren’t getting each-other’s points!
Still, I enjoy this semi-pointless discussion. I can’t seem to find anybody, not even my close friends, that I can hold such mature conversations with. Not to inflate ego or anything, but…
So, what have you decided about your dream, then? You’re not going to apply any further meaning to it?
well sure, narrowing belief down to specific things is narrowing the scope regardless of the things. Im however saying that inspiring things, or atleast inspiring to me (and maybe thats what this boils down to), are generally not vapidly spontaneous. you could appreciate things no person could have made (sunsets or whatever) but paint splattered on a canvas isnt art, its an accident, and you cant reap the benefits of credit with an accident. purposefully making an accident might have been meaningful the first time it was done, or maybe even in rare circumstances where it was needed very dire like, but in general I think its an excuse to be able to call yourself an artist without having any real talent. and maybe Im campaigning against something you havent really said. sometimes its hard to see past your own hangups, especially when youre something of a purist (for lack of better classification). I feel these thoughts could use saying regardless. I feel that art is on purpose. I feel that creativity is on purpose. and I feel that neither have a basis in either the mental or emotional, and indeed can be acheived through either with discipline.
as for the dream, it speaks multitudes of interesting things with my emotional reaction and reception and how it may impact my life in whatever obscure way,
but its conception itself is absolutely unmeaningful.
you mistake me,
I dont mean to undermine dreams. I merely want to refocus the scope,
because it speaks volumes of intrigue that we can have fake experiences that impress on us just like real ones,
even if their composition is near-nonsense.
indeed that probably makes for a better breed of experience.
how often will I get to experience suicide up close without ANY of the real world consequences?
like having people you know die
or being an accomplice to suicide
also all discussion is pointless.
you could probably use more in this one and others on this site than some (or most, whichever) of the ones you have in real life.
I saw paragraph upon paragraph of comments here, decided to skip to the bottom one (“All discussion is pointless”) which saved me from having to read every comment before it. I don’t want to read anything pointless.
I do that often, too; instead of arguing against someone, I rather end up arguing a point that is related but not necessarily against the other person’s belief.
I agree with you on some points; throwing paint on a canvas and claiming it’s art through certain (usually bull-shitted) means or otherwise accidentally creating something and then taking credit as an artist doesn’t make you an artist. You don’t have to be an artist to create art, though.
Not all art is spontaneous, and neither is creativity; I don’t think it requires deliberate and careful thought before-hand, either. You could be walking through the garden and see something peculiar or even something normal, but you get a sudden burst of inspiration from that concept and create art upon it.
Although, I suppose that’s not a valid argument; rather than the actual product being spontaneous, just the idea it was based upon was. I think it’s somewhat important to have both; spontaneous creativity and deliberate art-crafting. You don’t always have to have both, and “deliberate” and “spontaneous” are interchangeable, too, so it’s mostly a mixture of those two. It’s purposeful either way.
ahh, dreams… I see what you’re saying now. They’ve affected countless people throughout history, even though really they weren’t intended to show meaning; the people just got something from nothing. They created their own meaning to a meaningless concept. That I get!
Saying discussion is pointless is on the same page as saying dreams are pointless; it’s more what the individual takes away from something that’s intangible and open to interpretation.
That, in turn, though, does make it purposeful! Or, at least, in my opinion. I called this discussion semi-pointless because I knew we weren’t really going to get anywhere, not because I wasn’t taking anything away from it.
Everything is meaningfully pointless, isn’t it?
Not sure what this has to do with mother but…
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120830200453AAZOEgd
I suppose in Mother 2, there are a few times when the characters “dream” but it’s more like telepathy or just plain breaking the 4th wall. It’s much more whimsical than how dreams actually work. Do you dream of Poo?
that dream is absolutely not like mine in anyway. there was no incentive for he suicide, nor was it my idea, nor was there any sort of heralding or chain-reaction set in motion in the dream state or in my real life at that time or anytime, the kids did not resemble anyone I know in real life in any physical or metaphorical way, indeed the details of their existence didnt even exist in the waking world; their names were never metioned, but I knew them like they had been, their faces composite mockups of what I may be best to describe as average, but indeed unrecallable in a waking world. all the details were, but everything was just understood in the dreamstate, like I abruptly entered the body of someone else in a story in progress. it had increasingly less and less and less to do with ME at all the more I recall it, possibly less than I can physically elaborate in words.
it was more like a visceral fog.
also who cares.
if I didnt coddle you husks with fodder, your visits would be much less frequent (possibly near absent) and the only thing anyone would post is ‘when is this game gonna be done’ while your impatience was indulged to the point of gluttony.
Topics that aren’t related to Mother are just as pointless as topics that ask ‘when is this game gonna be done’ since they clutter up the space provided for on topic discussion.
I usually lurk and check for music updates and look at the twitter feed when I come here. Which is nice today since I just read:
I may was well throw up the night hotel theme while I’m at it right…?
: )
Not really criticizing your posts, btw, but personally I would visit the site the same amount, but post less often if you didn’t feed my husky self some fodder.
Wait is Baby talking about me or someone else? I thought this was a site about video games, not what ever that was.
Hahaha! Don’t take us being interested in your dreams as a good opportunity to inflate your ego!
@starman
try and act like you dont know the mentality or like it isnt present on this forum regardless of if it applies to you, or the sharp possibility that you may have done it at some period during the project (or at he very least this sites) lifespan. the fact that any change I may have, debatibly or otherwise, contributed is extremely recent on the time line, my vocal absence is 5 times my presence. the odds are stacked on my thesis, we all know there have far bigger droughts of progress that would rip some of the whiners interests to shreds.
and all discussion is wasted discussion cuz the only thing that matters about the game is the game. everyhing else is extra, and extra is always comfort. who caers in what form the extra is, cuz youd be getting alot less if I wasnt here.
@daniel
cuz you strictly talk about touhou on the touhou sites you visit.
(and before you waste a reply saying what is obvious, replace touhou with what ever noun when its inevitably wrong because it wasnt really the end of the stick I was striking with to begin with.)
@juggernaut
has nothing to do with arrogance. arrogance has to do with importance, or atleast self importance, but its not exactly a positive thing to me that I have to do what I do or suffer your nonsense. and youd be lying to say my presence on this site has absolutely no weight, regardless of youre interpretation of how positive it is.
youre also keywording me. you said something about inflated ego and now ANY percieved sign of it just has to be related.
you also act like this is the first topic Ive ever made, my contributions have been going on for awhile now.
I’m not trying to attack you, which you are perceiving that I am. You do make contributions, yes, but the fact that you put yourself at a higher position than us simply because you’d suffer the consequences of our “constant whining and complaining” is your own interpretation of how we act if you don’t post.
I’m trying to show you, regardless if your posting is regarded as “positive” or “negative”, that you shouldn’t put yourself at a higher importance simply because you post more often. You and the rest of us are all a mere side-entertainment to the main event, which is the reason we were all drawn here in the first place.
yo ni$$$a i din say nuthin bout been mor importante yo $$$
im bettr th& u cuz i mak $$$ and get tem bitshes
eeeey n366@ y didnt u say so! u be speakin dat troof! i got respect for dem n366a’s wit da betchis!
How many applications were received?
I found a remix of the level up jingles on Youtube.
I knew somebody would do it some time. : )
DAT FLOYD’S DRUM REND.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuHsMKpYwFU
Awesome, This seems like it would make excellent music for the Ending Credits! This guy should totally submit it.
God. I’ve been following this game for like, 3 years now. No rush, BUT I NEED IT NOW!!!
^^^^^ THIS!
Happy Thanks Giving everyone!
Thank you.
censored
Oh sorry I should have said “Happy holidays”
Im Pretty sure its a non religious holiday, and it wouldn’t Correspond with any other holidays anyhow
Yeah, but we’ve gotta appease everyone nowadays or someone will go complain that we’re “intolerant”.
if this was because I posted censored,
I dont post that telling him to censor,
I posted it because I had posted something before and it got deleted and I have been censored.
Sometimes I wonder if they ever need help with getting engine programmed… I’d love to help, but I’m not fluent in C++…
I’d really like to see a list of people who got the position, if that’s possible. Not to be some sort of stalker, but because I like to stay updated on this sort of thing. New members and all that jazz. Plus, it could very well be part of a new roundup thing to finally give that little extra bit of news it needs.
Oh, and I found a typo on this site. When you click “POST COMMENT” without writing anything in the box, the message that comes up is missing an ‘o’ in ‘too.’ Just thought I’d let you know if anybody else was dumb enough to hit post comment without writing anything. And to be honest, it probably doesn’t need fixed either as it’s not a big deal… Oh well.
anguishing soul ‘~’
Still haven’t gotten a response. Okay now I think I really bonked up my email address…
Same here. If I didn’t make it, that’s fine, but… It would be nice to get a response when you took the time to put together an application.
Judging by the other person who replied, I guess none of us have gotten replies yet… Despite the fact that they admitted having hired some members already before. I’d just wait it out.
I got my response this morning. Didn’t get in though… But I’ll just get better and try again in the future!
I thought the round up was supposed to be prevailent. it happened once and never again
as well as dave participation.
Promises are hard to keep.
Not keeping hard promises are almost always guaranteed, though.
there was no promise but I thought it was a solution. pragmatic things that benefit the parties involved generally will get done more often than things put on good faith that might not benefit the person doing them. regardless of how nice and willing that person may be. theres just more incentive, or atleast more capacity for incentive
and I thought there was incentive :c
I’m sure if any of them are in school (I assume most are) then they probably take a break from Mother 4 along with their studies break. Evidence points to low motivation from the Mother 4 team.
Well, we can hold in there a bit longer.
Stitch says there’s some good progress being made, so I bet there’s much more behind-the-scenes advancement that just isn’t being shown.
Or maybe they forgot about us…
*tear*
Who are you again?
There hasn’t really been any new stuff shown outside of this site. I mean, they’ve shown off the sprites for all the characters (official right now), and a couple songs, but that’s about it. What else can be shown in a summary of decent length?
^ This. I haven’t seen enough to warrant a new roundup post. It’s close, but it’s not there yet.
That was supposed to be a thing?
youre just gunning to break my heart now.
I saw that “who are you again” comment before I read the one above it and teared up a little.
Hey, at least you were acknowledged!
? Alwaaays look on the briiiight side of life! ?
Twas but a joke.
I don’t think I could forget the regulars here.
I know a guy who genuinely forgot his birthday and he seems like the happiest guy in the world. I secretly envy him but Ill never tell him that.
I assumed it went along with the Round-Up rhetoric about being more involved with the fanbase.
…Was there a rhetoric?
I actually forget. I don’t remember the last time there was a round-up… August? September?
It’s not like you have to do anything for the fanbase. We’re going to support the game either way.
cosumer complex is all consuming.
Roundup will be soon.
I think because they have started getting together By-Weekly, we should start getting By-Weekly updates, even if they didn’t make any major advances, or don’t want to put allot of time into update they could even do a tiny list like
-Added in certain Sprites
-Configured Music Volume and settings
-Fixed Various glitches
-ect.
Make the Mystical Record and Soul Consuming Flame return!
PLEASE FINISH THE GAME FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
It’s best not to rush perfection.
Patience. You should be grateful that they work so hard to make this the best game they truly can.
permaban.
That’s why people play video-games, anyway! To escape life.
If they had games that were too realistic, like a step farther than The Sims, then it’s doubtful it’d do well. Who wants to play in an “alternate reality” that directly mirrors our everyday sucky lives?
Although, I suppose I’m exaggerating. Life isn’t that sucky.
its not that clear cut, second life does suprisingly well and thats mostly what it is. life cant ever be truly duplicated in a game though because youll always be guarenteed a freedom from real life consequence of what you do in the game, granting you a much more liberated but technically and comparably inaccurate structure of thinking. most of it goes without saying.
no one plays games for accuracy of function though, it enhances the detail but isnt overall crucial. knowing how engineerically accurately a guy picked a lock is much less important than knowing that he did in fact pick a lock or knowing that he did it skillfully.
at the end of the day, its the story, and the visceral reactions.
or something, Im too gnarled to be too concise.
The story and immersion provides an excellent distraction. But mostly, I think, video games are so appealing because, unlike life, they guarantee success. If you put in the time and effort (grinding, collecting, ect), you’re always guaranteed payout in a video game. They’re designed to lay obstacles before you and for you to overcome them triumphantly. Obviously this is not the case in real life. Success is never 100% guaranteed in real life no matter your amount of effort.
Real life:
Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.
in real life games exist.
games are fake life.
ergo
in real life houses fake life
ergo
fake life is still real life.
Ahh, bea-u-tiful explanation!
Games are about having control in an unreal world, but you’re still playing in the real world, and it can still affect you even though it’s in an unreal world.
Unreal things have very real influences on us all.
not to mention what is usually referred to when someone says ‘real life’ is a construct anyway. the only thing life did was have time, have space, and have forces react and collide in them. all the structure and expectation of normalcy was instituted by humans. should replace real life with human life or something, because its not exactly the poster boy for real either. or actual life. that might be more appropriate.
Hey guys, McMaxxis posted on the forum turnarounds of the MOTHER 4 characters. There are some little added details to their sprites, that might change or not.
http://content.screencast.com/users/MXXai/folders/Jing/media/41907e7b-a3f1-4496-a5af-c295249cfa75/2012-11-15_2327.png
Hmp. At first I thought that Zack’s sprite used to look a little weird, all alone up there, all wide eyed and happy. But along with the other characters he looks great. Nice going with the changes guys!
Why is the female protaginist’s hair long from all side but the front, it looks weird.
