Simultaneous Computer Malfunction (SCM)

Posted by The Dave

It is a sad day in the Mother 4 office. Over the past couple days both Chaisu and I have had computer issues. We thought we’d share.

But before you freak out, there is goodish news too.

So, last night my computer decided that Windows was going to have problems and just not start. I’ve run through a bunch of recovery options and have decided that I need an actual installation disc to recover the corrupted or damaged files which are freaking it out. However, I lack an installation disc. So unhappy Dave.

But the good side to this is that I installed Ubuntu again, which is always nice. Also, everything is still in tact and my hard drive has not been corrupted or gotten dead or anything like that. Even if it did, I wouldn’t lose much because I actually keep backups of my work unlike certain other fan game projects. ;)

Now, onto Chaisu’s problem. This one is kinda big so be prepared to cry with us. His external drive which held all of Mother 4′s concept art and earlier graphics and audio was corrupted and the data on it was lost. We’re recovering what we can from Zephys’ and my own stashes of Mother 4 goodness. We hope we can recover most of what was lost.

So yeah. These issues could set us back a little bit. In the meantime, I’ll be developing from Windows on my laptop (inconvenient) and from Ubuntu on my desktop and Chaisu will be plugging away at sprites and tiles and all that. And as always Zephys will continue to work on the story and SNOBODYS will continue to pump out their excellent tunes.

Dave out.

(To clarify, nothing related to the engine and no new game content was lost. So we’re okay in that respect.)

Good luck recovering! I’ve had this happen to me once. Not fun.

What a shame, but that’s not too bad, is it? Earlier graphics and audio would be all the obsolete stuff that you guys replaced, right? I suppose the loss of concept art would be a problem for all the stuff that hasn’t been made yet.

Yeah. There was also some story and notes that were lost, however we were able to recover most of the important bits.

But yeah, concept art would’ve been nice to have around for reference. Also, now we don’t have all that early stuff to show after the game’s launch. We would’ve like to have something like that.

Oh god, I will surely pray for you guys tonight. Indeed, it is some bad new, but I’ve waited long, and will wait more if there’s a need to do so. I know you’re going to work harder after this impass, even better than you’ve been working till now.

Kisses to all the team and all the team’s computers.

Jeez, yeah, that’s too bad… but, like Food_Eater mentioned, luckily it was mostly pretty early stuff that got lost. Speaking from experience, I’d rather lose early things like that versus very nicely polished final product stuff. (And being one of the head honchos of the project, I feel confident Chaisu would remember most of what he created, and would likely make small adjustments to them in the process as well. :b )

But either way, that really is a shame. Condolences for the lost hardware; such bad luck is always prevalent with the hard-working. (I have myself one of those external hard drives for such cases; being a texture hacker, I’ve already gone through losing all my stuff before. Maybe, if none of you have one, you could look into getting a few for such scenarios?)

I guess this is sort of an update:

I’m still not getting anywhere with my computer. I now have an installation disc, however it refuses to check the files and replace them. I’m using the System File Checker (sfc command) and all it does is say, “There is a repair pending, please restart to scan” or something to that extent. No matter how many times I restart, it still refuses to perform a scan. If anyone knows anything about this, please send something my way. I’d greatly appreciate it.

Now, Chaisu’s position has worsened; his computer has been invaded by a slew of viruses. He’s backed up essential files to DVDs and is reformatting his drive and performing a reinstallation of XP. Wish him luck.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Woah. Where did the viruses come from?
It’s sad to see that the situation only got worse. I wish you guys the best of luck.

I hate it when it happens.
I once encountered it so I can understand your feeling.mate.

    H-hey, no offense to other fangames! I backup every week XD;

But glad to hear it didn’t ruin everything. Hope you’re going strong again soon, though a little bit of concept art’s missing.

The external hard-drive died? Wow… For some reason, I always thought of those as more secure. Good luck with the system recoveries, and I hope you can get your systems back up soon.

Man, that’s terrible! But I’m willing to wait some more time, and I really hope your progress will run smoothly from here to the end of making the game. I wish you guys all the best! Oh, and my name is Dave, too, Dave! :D
